An eco friendly hotel, or a green hotel, is an environmentally sustainable hotel or accommodation that has made important environmental improvements to its structure in order to minimize its impact on the natural environment.
Electricity saving initiatives
SOLAR FARM
Irene Country Lodge installed a 312.12kW ( Kilowatt ) grid tied solar photo voltaic system which produces approximately 502 571 kWh per year. This was a big step towards reducing our carbon footprint. Irene Country Lodge now generates approximately 90% of Its electricity during the day (sunshine hours) through the photo voltaic plant.
Water Saving Initiatives
RAINWATER IS COLLECTED
Rainwater is collected in storage containers to be used for gardening. The storm water run-off is also directed into the 2 dams on the property. Conservation notices in bathrooms to only wash towels that are in use. The irrigation of the property is maintained through the use of rainwater and bore hole water and is supplied from Rietvlei dam that supports the farming and dairy farming adjacent to hotel.
